Black Icemat 2nd Edition Review

Shadow Knight Systems has given TechIMO the privilege of reviewing two types of mouse pads specifically designed for gaming. The first mouse pad I will review is the Black Icemat, 2nd Edition.

What You Get

The pad arrives in a nice box and is packaged with polystyrene, which helps limit the chances of receiving a broken Icemat.

The Icemat is a glass mouse pad with a special coating that has a very interesting and unique feel compared to other gaming pads currently on the market.

The first thing that stood out about the Icemat were the dimensions of the pad: 10 x 12 inches (250 x 300 mm). The large size allows for a wide range of movement without the worry of running the mouse off the pad.

Use and Performance

The movement of the mouse on the pad was smooth and quick. Other Icemat reviews have complained about the noise of the mouse gliding across the glass surface, but I did not notice any such problems.

Cleaning the Icemat is simple and easy. Any glass cleaner, Windex for example, will rightfully rid most dirt and anything else that will accumulate on the mouse pad.

A three-inch pad surfer Teflon tape is also included with the Icemat. The pad surfer is used for noise elimination and the opportunity for even smoother movement across the glass surface. Even without the pad surfer installed, I did not notice any problems.

Durability

I did not intentionally perform rigorous durability testing, but the pad will certainly survive a short drop onto a carpeted floor. The mouse pad is made of glass, so extreme caution is recommended when transporting the Icemat.

Conclusion

Overall, I would recommend the Icemat to gamers that desire a quality mouse pad where price is not a concern.

A thank you goes out to Shadow Knight Systems for giving TechIMO the opportunity to review the Black Icemat, 2nd Edition.

After extensive use, I certify that the Icemat is a great product, especially for those demanding LAN parties where you need the extra edge in gaming.

Pros:

  • Large surface area
  • Comfortable
  • Precision aiming
  • Amazing accuracy
  • Non-slip rubber feet
  • Will not bend or lose shape

Cons:

  • High suggested retail price
  • Any type of liquid will result
    in erratic pointer behavior
  • Possibility of the pad breaking
    or cracking

Overall Rating: 9.5/10 (higher is better)

You won't know until you know, then you'll wish you hadn't.

very interesting pad. ingenious idea, glass is so ubersmooth, tracking should be a breeze. cant get me to buy one, something that fragile would get busted at any of the LAN's I go to (all the fighting aint digital ;)

Sweet review, Mike. I'm still skeptical about optical mice on it as well as possible noise since most likely my mouse is different than yours.

I'll wait until you review the other pad to make a decision. :)

Optical mice work fine on it. At least I know for a fact that Microsoft optical mice work very well on it.

Since I either have headphones or the speakers on so loudly, the noise isn't too big of an issue. Also, the pad surfers help eliminate a bit of noise as well. Feel free to PM/E-mail/or post questions about the pad!

How about the surface durability? I was going to get a ratpadz but a bunch of people are complaining that the surface wears down to the point that it’s useless. Also how does the Teflon/mouse feet hold up? Rating: 5/5

Surface durability, at first glance, doesn't seem to be much of an issue. Whatever they used to coat the glass works well. Windex, water, or anything else will easily clean the surface of the pad.

I would assume glass is durable in applications like these. The only question is how durable the coating is. Glass doesn't warp or shrink or anything, so I guess it's just a matter of time to see how the coating is. Rating: 5/5

44 dollars? not worth it imo, get a ratpad for 20... and since it is glass, it prolly would get broken/cracked when you go to a lan party... and thats where the real gamers play ^^

Since I posted the article, thanks to my brother, the pad has been dropped a few times onto the floor and has been fine. It really depends what you're doing with the mouse pad: if you're launching it at the wall chances are, it'll break. It'll easily withstand a couple drops to the floor.

Wikilobbyist challenging the truthiness of wikiality.

Yes Joker, you are evil for using such a cheap mouse pad!

I briefly used the original Icemat with good results, and I never had any concerns about durability. If it could survive my abuse, I am sure the 2nd edition should have absolutely no problem under normal conditions.

The Icemat is still working flawlessly. Several hours of gaming per night, plus relentless internet browsing is done with it. :)

Yes, you are most certainly evil for using a cheap mouse pad. ;)

Disabled California medical marijuana recipient...

Its gotta be made of something other then "regular" glass dont ya think for 44$?---must be some kind of safety glass since breakage seems to be the main consideration...

The Icemat is KIND OF durable, but I strongly urge gamers NOT to toss it around like a toy. :)

The surface of the Icemat is something that I have never used before - It is slick and mice love it! I am still not sure what the "special coating," is. :)
