The octane number mostly refers to how the gas acts under pressure. Low octane means it combusts at a lower pressure. If you have a high compression engine (sports car) and you use cheap gas, the gas will actually explode without the spark plug even firing; that pre-ignition is what the knocking is.


My truck is low compression so I just use the cheap gas.
