LAN Connected, not receiving packets?

My LAN says it is connected at 100mbps, however i am unable to access the internet or use aol etc. It is sending packets of information but it isn't receiving any at all. When i go to support it gives me an ip adress and a subnet mask but no default gateway. Under adress type it says automatic private ip address, but it should say assigned by dhcp. I have no idea what is going on and i am thouroughly mad. I just need to know how to get my adress type back to assigned by dhcp. I am running xp and i am connected straight into the cable modem which has been confirmed as working properly. Please help me
