sounds like your over taxing a 1x agp slot with 4-8x agp card, if thats not the problem i'd suggest checking the pin count on the monitir cable as a bent can cau se problems like this...
most of the geforce 4 440 are a 8x agp so it could be mainboard incompatibility with the card your using.....
