Maybe you're not seeing the files because you've got the files 'hidden'?

Go back into safe mode, open up Search (start menu -> search).
Open the menu Tools -> Folder Options
click the [View] tab
Select (x) Show hidden files and folders
Uncheck [ ] Hide extensions for known file types, and [ ] Hide protected operating system files
Now do your search for that .bak file (or browse to where it should be)
