Personally, I think it's a good thing for everyone to take. It was the state Hunter's Safety course and all the boys and many of the girls took it.
By making the kids aware of the dangers in the class room, you avoid the failure by the parents to teach their kids not to play with guns. It's a great way to make people aware of the dangers, even if you're anti-gun or never intend on owning or allowwing a gun in the house.
I taught my kids gun safety when they were young, and to this day, they don't touch or will comment when I walk away from a gun on the table, even though it's in pieces being cleaned.  (Note: I don't leave guns laying around that are operational.)
