USB internal card reader problem

Thanks in advance to those that reply. I have been trying to figure out why my girlfriend's computers internal card reader started causing windows error messages. Everytime I boot up the computer I gert the message "there is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive." at which point I have to select continue 8 times (for each of the different types of cards it reads). Besides that the reader works fine. I'm just trying to work out the bug. If I leave a Memory Stick in the reader I only get the error message 6 times (each of the 4 slots can read 2 different cards). Is there a way to keep the computer from accessing the card reader until I put a memory card in it?

By the way I tried downloading the drivers but they just dont want to take. The device is using the microsoft drivers.

Thanks again.

The PC is a HP a265c desktop.
2.8 P4 HT
ASUS built motherboard with 865 chipset
