cheap laptop as a wireless thin client?

i was thinking of getting some really really cheap laptop (maybe ~300mhz) to do my homework and stuff out of my room. I thought that maybe I could set it up to use my desktop for processing power for programming/compiling stuff.

Is this a possible and reasonable setup?
I would think the biggest obstacle would be to get a wireless card I can boot from..
Anybody try this?
