In terms of quality difference between a digital connection (DVI) versus and analog (VGA / HD-15) connection, from what I've seen, it's barely noticeable (given the same monitor and graphics hardware). To the degree that there is any difference, it's in the colors and contrast. Of course, to many, any difference is a big difference.
However, I also suspect that lower quality graphics hardware and/or monitors would make the difference more noticeable. I know that with analog monitors (CRTs), the quality of graphics hardware (and the monitor, of course) is an issue.
