Well I run AVG on a AMD 2700+ with over a gig of RAM

.. So i ma not to concerned with resources atleast in terms of my Antivirus. As well I have not used Avast either so I can't comment.

I can say though, both Spybot and Adaware have monitoring software that can run in the background looking constantly for spyware, much like antivirus. I don't use anything like that, so it cuts down on my resource usage.
