Another google search landing.. maxtor 5000dv drive making the musical tone exactly like first post. My drive was working perfectly.. I turned it off and unplugged it to go out of town for a few days. Plugged it back in and here I am/was. After all day fussing trying to get drive letters I realized it wasn't spinning.

I put mine in the freezer for maybe 10 mins.. when I plugged the power back in I also had it tipped at a 45 deg angle or so.. and as I moved it to plug it in I felt it jump and start spinning. That was 2 hours ago.. I'm happily copying off the data I have on it.

Thanks for the thread and replies that gave me the courage to try the freezer just long enough to chill it... dunno, but it's working now.
