Same boot problem as this poster (not password issue)

My Compaq nc6000 also started behaving this way all of a sudden. It occasionally boots, but it always takes several tries now. Usually the blue WLAN light and the orange light come on, along with the fan, then after a second it shuts off. The green "power on" light does not come on in this situation. After several tries, it will boot (the green power on light turns on). At that point, everything is fine and it runs flawlessly.

It has been suggested that this might indicate that the hard drive is marginal, and is not always responding to the initial hardware detection. I'm not sure I believe this, because of the behavior of the power on light.
