Wide Screen LCD monitor not displaying correctly

Hi

Just FYI - I am not very techie, so forgive me if I use the wrong terminology, I'm trying:-)

The problem: I just installed a new wide screen LCD monitor but the screen is stretched out and I can't find much help in the troublshooter or manual.

Specs: BenQ FP202W, is supposed to be at a screen resolution of 1680x1050. I'm on Windows XP.

But - the information on the screen (text and windows) are wider than the actual screen. ie everything looks stretched out and the text is blurry, and the mouse scrolls wider to the side than the physical screen.

So Far:
- I tried different resolutions, which just changed the amount of screen that didn't fit. It's like the aspect ratio is off.

-I tried updating the driver (didn't help).

So I thought that maybe the video card wasn't compatible? I have a SiS 650 / 740 / 661FX / 741 / 760 series (that's what the device manager lists it as). But I'm a little stumped in figuring out if this is the problem or not?

Thanks for any suggesions
