Yes, removing Norton and using Avast and Sygate instead will be much faster.

If you have some extra time you could backup all your data, and then reformat(though Norton might get installed when you use a recovery disk, if it does you will have to use the Norton removal tool to get rid of everything).

The worst thing about Norton is when you uninstall that POS you still don't get rid of everything. It leaves a bunch of crap behind.
