Well, a few months ago now, i read pretty much this whole thread trying to find out what was going on with my Maxtor hard drive, as it was making the typical beeping noises. To cut a very long story of pain and frustration short, this is what i did to get mine working.
At certain times, mine wasnt even being detected by the BIOS, or would show up as some wierd Calypso Hard Drive. It seem to be, if i left the hard disk cool down over night and try again, it would perform better. I had to resort to taking the cover off the hard disk, and it kept clunking, and sure enough, the arm was stuck, I nudge it carefully, and it sprung into action. However, it still would not work!!
I had completely give up with the hard disk, and had it stored in the cupboard. Until i found this program:

I had tried loads of others, but thought id give this a try, so dug out the hard disk, and luckily the BIOS actually detected the drive, but it did not show up in Windows. However, this prog can "Find Partitions" which is what it did. I was then able to recover all my lost files!!!!
I would REALLY give this program a go becuase i had completely given up!
