So, looks like this thread is moving in the direction of this random no booting issue.
My NC6000 (6 months outside warranty) has just started to do this and it is really annoying. If it boots, then it works like a charm - no problems at all. But if some reason you have to shutdown or restart... Good luck!
Anyway; My problem is exactly as described: Press power-on, fan comes on, HDD spins up a bit, CD spins up a bit, then, BAM! It just powers off and the orange "charging" led comes on.
So far the only other forum I have found relating to this issue is here:

I would agree with other observations that my fan has been going a bit more than usual over the last while, but it has been a gradual increase in activity and so it is only really with hindsight that I can say this.
This is such an annoying problem. This is my primary machine and I need it daily for work so I can't really afford to take it apart to have a look around. I'm capable of swapping HDDs / RAM etc but it sounds like this isn't the issue. Furthermore becuase it is an intermittent problem I am loathed to take it into the HP guys because (Murphy's Law says) you can gaurantee that when I take it in, it will work fine and they will charge me money to tell me exactly that.
My question: What is a replacement MoBo worth? Seeing as it is outside warranty I will be paying to get it fixed so I'd like to know if anyone out there has an idea what it might be worth.
If the replacement cost is too high I may as well look start looking for a new machine. I mean 4 years isn't a bad run...
