iPod can't download music during Sync

I have a 4th generation U2 20B iPod and a MacBookPro, connected through the USB port. My iTunes music is on a external 1TB drive (Firewire 800). When I plug my iPod up to the Mac, it recognizes it, but then some point very quickly (2 songs...17 songs...) into syncing and loading music, the transfer stops. The display at the top of iTunes says the sync is still taking place, but the song stays at whatever it's on, never changing...and the drive light for the drive stops flashing, like I've stopped the Sync, which I haven't. At this point, x'ing the sync to stop it does no good, and I have to unplug the iPod and do a force quit on iTunes. I have restored the software on the iPod, rebooted the iPod, etc. The music plays fine through the computer using iTunes, this is just with the iPod. HELP!
