Can't give you much detail yet, but 7.10 installed without any problems at all, connected me to the net automatically, and its package manager has a perfectly intuitive interface. I'd go with that version rather than 6.06.
Yes, "Core 2" is 64-bit, as opposed to the earlier "dual core".
