My freind and yours - Google - has all sorts of information:

Looking after your inkjet cartridges – tips and hints

Did you know that there is a right way and a wrong way to store your inkjet cartridges? Most people don’t realise that if you store your inkjet cartridges the wrong way it can cause problems with printing.

When storing your inkjet cartridges, ensure that you store upright. This will provide for best printing. And don’t worry if you are thinking all is lost because you have already been storing that spare inkjet cartridge upside down in your desk drawer. Just remove it and store upright for a few hours before you intend to use it – this will fix the problem.

Printer ink cartridges don’t like too much heat or cold so keep away from high or freezing temperatures. And don’t ever leave your inkjet cartridges in direct sunlight.

Follow these few steps and you will find that your inkjet cartridges will provide you with the performance you are expecting.
