I installed Vista.
When I installed Ubuntu 7.10 after, I was able to create two new partitions for Ubuntu.

So you should be fine. Once installed: You are going to want to connect to the internet by wire/lan. Then you should be able to get all the updates, and will be able to connect wireless.
