I was just reading a bit about Xandros and it seems like it's a good distribution. It uses KDE as the desktop which is a good choice if you want similarity to the Windows desktop. You can theme it so it looks virtually identical to XP if you want.

Unfortunately, they don't have a Live CD that you could try out of Xandros but probably just browse around their forums to see what others are saying.

As for Ubuntu, which is what I'm using on my laptop right now, it worked out of the box for me. All the devices were recognized (unlike Windows) and I didn't have to download drivers from Toshiba (unlike Windows). If you want the KDE desktop by default, look at Kubuntu which is Ubuntu with the KDE desktop installed by default. You can tweak KDE on there just as much as on Xandros.
