Hi,
I have a Maxtox 250Gb disk who suddenly died on me with the "singing harddisk" symptom.
After trying shaking and kicking it, I finally decided to open it and take a look inside. The arm is towards the center of the platters, and I can move it back and forth - it's not stuck to the discs.
When I power the drive on, I see the arm move back to the center position, and hear the noise. The discs are not spinning up at all, not even trembling, so I think the motor is broken. When I tried to gently turn the discs myself, it didn't work. I had to use quiet some force to have the discs turn, and it doesn't go smoothly at all. It is as if the motor melted down or so.
Nice to know: when I power the drive back on, the silly melody starts playing. When I -- during the (it plays it 3 times) "song" -- turn the discs myself, the "song" stops as if the electronics detect that the platters are moving.
Now... who knows how to unlock the motor ?
Can I eventually replace the motor (from an old similar disc ?)
Who has a broken silmilar disc whic I can perhaps use to tear out the motor ?
All help appreciated !
