Longer crankshaft means smoother running engine..less vibration...which is why a VW beetle's opposed 4 sounds different than an inline 4, and the Subaru's horizontally opposed 4 sounds similar, but different due to the presence of a water jacket.

Also, the difference in sound comes from a different timing on the exhaust pulses.

I always wondered if you changed the length of the pipes on a 4 banger so that the exhaust pulse was in the same tempo as a V8 if it would make a difference in noise quality. Most likely not.
