Another thing to remember is that if at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Even if 1 or 2 or even 3 refuse you, the next one could be the charm. Persistence, documenting names, times, and actions, moving up the ladder, and being patient while negotiating can pay off big time  There also comes a time when you know when to throw in the towel and move (your money) on.
