Sometimes after uninstalling firewalls the winsockets can get jack up. Try this WinSock XP Fix download and review - fix XP internet connectivity from SnapFiles You have XP, right?

Also, make sure that the SPI firewall the router isn't blocking anonymous Internet connections (that might be the reason) and the port is forwarded to your computer's IP address. The computer needs a static IP address. Also check to see if UPaP is on. Might want to turn that off.
