PCIe x16 is what it is. The card will work.

But it will run significantly slower than a high performance motherboard with a 2.0 slot?

Have you tried manually setting memory speed to 333MHz in BIOS setup? Try it. Use the CMOS clear jumper if it locks up. Update your BIOS. Any motherboard that supports your CPU should also support the RAM.

I'll try that soon and get back to you, however PB has locked everything - I've tried to change the CPU frequency at least and no luck.

I stand corrected - multiply memory speed x 6 for your quad core. Come to think of it, the 333MHz speed that you think it should run at may apply only to Core 2 Duos - not quad. Please research that.

A Q6600 is meant to run at 266MHz X 9 multiplier, one person has suggested that better RAM might fix this (other than a new mobo); is this true?

Dual-channel RAM is nice, but not earth-shaking. You should consider:

1. 2 x 1.5GB matched modules

or

2. Switch to 64-bit and two larger matched modules.

Frankly, I don't get my panties in a bunch over dual-channel RAM. It's only a minor bump in performance all else being equal.

RAM is extremely cheap compared to the other components and I can definitely afford the upgrade. In fact, it may even be the RAM that's bottlenecking the potentials of my other components.
If I install a 1GB 4850, will it take away 1GB of my installed 4GB memory leaving me with 3GB (the Vista-32bit limit), or 2GB?

You do NOT need an 800W PSU. It's a waste of money. If you need a little headroom, 600W is more than adequate.

I think I might get an OCZ PSU:
How does performance compare between the SXS, MXS and GXS?
Is there a specific model and wattage you'd recommend?
The reason I was looking at 700W+ PSUs is because I don't want to have to upgrade my PSU later on, as personally I think PSUs are a waste of money (I know, ironic I want a costly PSU); not increasing PC performance.
