How to delete old Linux partition

Okay so I was dual booting Ubuntu Linux and vista. Some time ago the Linux install was somehow corrupted or something....Probably because of vista. I am still using GRUB which could be fixed by FIXMBR if I am not mistaken. The real problem is the wasted space by the unused linux partition.....The partition manager in vista does not see it, therefore I can not delete it. I next tried the ubuntu live cd and used gparted, but aparently I dont have rights to the partition or something so I can not delete it.....How am I suposed to get rid of it??? I can't reformat because what would be a "system restore disk" for vista is a hidden partition on my hardrive. So reformating means I wont be able to clean install vista....please help XD
