Whenever the hive isnt enclosed the nest can become huge because it isnt restrained by the sides. From what little I know bees prefer enclosed spaces like a florida home - 3 million bees found in Miami home - UPI.com - 3 MILLION bees !! A Normal colony has ~50,000 individual bees.

Reading the story above reminds me, different bees strains act differently. The bees in the tree might have never been discovered until they actually stung someone IF they ever stung anyone at all.

BTW: Bees poop outside / away from their colony.
