BZZZZZT, try again.
We are able to purchase hog meat as part of a live hog purchase from a local farmer known to me. Generally my wife and I pay for about a tenth of a hog and split it with our co-op(depending on how many other families join to help us buy the pig). Generally my wife and I get about 30 to 45 lbs of good meat from each hog purchase. Our actual cost for a whole hog has varied from .70/lb to $.97/lb. Since you can get 16 to 20 slices of bacon out of each lb of back meat(Belly is ok too-it just has a more fat).
Straight cost for 16 slices from back meat at .97/lb = 6 cents/slice. The cost works out to be just about 10 cents per slice of bacon AFTER the cost of running a Freezer AND actually cooking, seasoning, etc. . .
