It's not illegal to copy your DVD's to your laptop for your viewing.

I think a program called DVD Shrink can copy them and reduce their size to save space on the HDD too.

You probably need to google for reviews to see how well the tuner works & if the antenna that comes with it is any good. The Hauppauge that Tony linked is probably better than the Pinnacle that I linked. I have a Hauppauge 1800 in my HTPC & it works well.
