I think there is something wrong with your mouse. I get close to a year on batteries.

I did have one die on me - the type with the big pad looking thing for a transmitter with the usb cord, vs the new ones with a little unit that plugs into the usb. When it died it did the same thing yours did.

I'd vote for replacement.
