please don't take this as a thread crap, but the IBM Deathstar isn't exactly the highest rated drive... I've had more than a few die on me!

Linux Mint, which is based on Ubuntu, has a backup feature which allows you to backup your install on cd or a pen drive, which would let you then swap out the drive for a new one. APTonCD is the program name.
