Could be nothing more than a problematic add-on. Disable all add-ons. If the problem goes away, start re-enabling add-ons one at a time until the problem reappears.

I am currently using Mozilla Minefield 3.6a1pre (Firefox 3.6 pre-alpha development), and it loads rather quick.

If you are truly concerned about Firefox start times, there is an older preload utility available as an open source project. AFAIK, it should work with current Firefox builds. Be sure to read the documentation, as IIRC there is a note about use close to end Firefox instead of exit.
