John's absolutely right. If you're going to use the build as a learning experience, by all means, go ahead and build it. That way
you'll know everything about your machine firsthand.
On the other hand, if you're not going to get into OC'ing, it's hard
to beat a Dell deal that Doc references on a regular basis.

My first WinXP machine I bought from Dell, because after costing
out the individual components and operating system, I discovered
that I couldn't build it for less than Dell. And they are very quiet
machines, just not tremendous performance and expandability,
and small power supplies(250watt).
I added my own extra memory, DVD-ROM, soundcard, speakers, and monitor.
