Also depends on the native mode of the lappy's screen. My Gateway at work is native 1024x768 and any D3D apps in 800x600 only use the center of the screen even when they are maximized.
According to the specs (found at http://www.ita.sel.sony.com/support/...k/pcgfx120.pdf), it also has 1024x768 (XGA) native resolution.
So you probably had it in 800x600 (or less) and the BIOS isn't set to expand or zoom the display. If that option is there, it just expands the image to fill the screen if you're running 800x600, though it does cause some nasty things to happen to the screen fonts, etc. Your best best is just to set the desktop res to 800x600 @ 60Hz (refresh rate has no effect on LCD's AFAIK).
