I will also recomend the Dells The Insperation serries should suit your needs well, maybe even the lighter ones. Another thing to maybe check is finding a brand you like and going to Best Buy or something and looking for specials. I just got a new HP laptop for $1k with a 1.6Ghz and 256MB RAM and a ATI mobility As for compaqs... those seem to be very fickle... all compaq stuff I have bought has died near instant but the Compaq Presario 1681 Laptop that my sister bought way back in 95 or so is still kicking and now in my possession. This thing should have died ages ago as she used it heavily on the road being a stage manager for concerts. Only thing I can find wrong is the Delete key popped off and the battery is finally going. And on that note.... get some form of protection. Best Buy offers a service plan that covers laptops from general wear and tear... get it repaired any where and mail em the bill and they will send a check... its international so thats a + but it will also cover your battery. The first thing to go on a laptop is normally the battey. I paid $199 for my serive plan and a replacement battery is over $200 so it was well worth the initial money for 3 years of protection Best of luck to you
