Fouled ASPI might put the drive in an inappropriate state.
Remember that burning software can lock some CDRW drives via software (my 2x2x6 Philips, for example), and commands are usually issued to drives based on various OS events (ever open 'My Computer' and have the floppy access light go off?).
I'd say it was worth the effort, since ASPI repairs gave an older 4x2x6 yammy better success rate.
