Some initial thoughts:

Are you getting a valid IP address on the wireless client?

If not:
Check to ensure MAC filtering is set correctly on the SMC 7004VWBR router. It could be enabled but not have the wireless NIC's MAC on the ACL.

The SSID is normally case sensitive, ensure same upper/lower case is used at the laptop.

Ensure you first use the latest drivers for the wireless NIC and not any OS default drivers.

Perhaps a firmware change on the SMC 7004VWBR router is in order (try newest firmware first).
