I'm not sure, but there is a way to do it with one. There is a program out called D2 Loader that enables you to load multiple instances of B.net from the same computer. It's aimed at muleing, but I think they've expanded it so that both characters are controable (one at a time).

If you end up having to buy a new Xpack and / or a new classic send me a PM. A bunch of us used to play this game addictively last year, but our college carrers can't take it anymore

and we're looking to unload 3 or 4 pairs.
