Win2K no Audio Playback device

This computer has a soundblaster card installed and the dos drivers for it will let the card play sound if loaded from a boot disk. Once it is loaded into windows 2k it will not recognize that there is any audio playback device when looking at control panel -> sounds and multimedia-> audio tab. The sound card looks like it installed properly, and it lists it as the sound recording preferred deivce. The drivers have been reloaded and different ones have been tried. It is like there is some setting that makes it not accept audio playback devices is this possible? It is at work and there are many other computers on the network that have all the same parts and software, but they work fine. Thanks in advance!
