I'd say skip the ATi card all together. It's usually easier to get games running with Nvidia hardware. If you think ATi's driver support in Windows is iffy wait to you see the support they provide Linux users.  NVidia has not only faithly provided drivers for Linux they've also developed an installer as well. They're leagues ahead of ATi in that respect and that's why I recommend their cards.
And SB Live's are usually work right out of the box with any modern linux distro so that's a safe bet too.
