I had a similar problem with a USB mouse on a system with a VIA chipset. Mine was more mouse "lag". They had a "USB Filter Driver" that fixed it.

Is there a reason you can't just go PS/2 with an adapter?

Myself I prefer to keep my USB open and plug my MX500 into PS/2.
