I woke up this morning; started my computer; and instead of starting, it sang back to me. As you may have guessed by now, it was my HD; my 200GB Maxtor DiamonMax+
After an hour of "why didn't I make backups?" type of remorse, and as I was preparing it to be shipped, I decided to check the web. All I had to do is type "maxtor beeps" in google and the very first hit brought me here.
I tried tapping; then shaking; then shaking while power plugged (not a ketchup bottle shake but rather a wrist twist); and viola! It started spinning.
I'm not sure if I want to return it yet. May be if it does it again. If I do return it, Maxtor will send me a refurbished one (their policy replaces with a brand new one only if the purchase occured less than 30 days ago). I have a feeling that they may just shake it and return it.
I have a feeling that this problem occurs for a reason. The last time I turned off the computer, I turned off the power switch while the HD was doing stuff (probably indexing). I always do a normal shutdown but my computer was hung up at the time. I wonder if the other people with this problem did a normal shutdown before the problem occured.
Many thanks to ScottW who starting this very helpful thread.
