What desktop resolution are you using? I'm guessing it's below 1024x768 which I believe is the resolution you need to use the whole of the screen. And unless it can go to 1280x1024, 1024x768 will probably be the highest resolution it can do. Oh and make sure you've installed the screen/monitor driver too (it's available on the Windows Supplement File disks if you haven't).

To change desktop resolution in Windows, right-click the desktop > choose Properties > Settings tab.

There's also an IBM Thinkpad utility (General Configuration Utility, I think) which can make it use the full screen at lower resolutions too.
