I'm not too sure about Windows XP but if you go to "Run" in the start menu and type command you should get a command window.

When you released the IP did the router issue a new one to the desktop? If it did go into the command window and try to ping the Mac box with the following:

ping <IP of MAC box>

See if you get a response.
