Back to the original question: What modem are you using? Is it a winmodem? I know that with my winmodem I had a very simialar problem where SuSE installed the driver and I could not connect for the same reason. It kept saying no carrier.

I guess I should also tell you what i did to fix that problem(in case that is your problem as well).

I had to download the driver for it from the modem's website(in my case an intel chipset modem) and then install that driver and I have no problems with it now.
