I had an AST 486/33 with this problem after doing a clean install of Win95. The only solution was to install the real mode drivers. It had something to do with the IDE controller not being compatible with the Win95 drivers and I couldn't find an AST driver for this dinosaur. Anyway, I only set it up for my son to have his own computer so running with real mode drivers was no big deal.
