can I pause the linux boot sequence?

I'm sure that a log file is written that contains the information that I want, but let's say I just wanted to pause the boot sequence at any given time (so I could read what's on the screen)... is there a way to do that?

I think the Scroll Lock key may do that. Have not tried it, though.
