notepad.exe missing

I have this little problem with notepad, everytime i try to open it i have this error message:

The C:\WINDOWS\system32\autochk.exe application cannot be run in Win 32 mode.

I don't know what i did to have that appearing when i try to use notepad but i sure want to know what i can do to get it back.

Thanks for your time

Looks like the shortcut is messed up for whatever reason. What happens if you type in "notepad" in the Run menu? If it works, just change the shortcut to point to "C:\WINDOWS\system32\notepad.exe".

What os?

notepad is in the windows folder.

At least it is in w98se.

So I would go in there and see if you see it there..if so just right click it and go "send to desktop"

Or search for "notepad.exe" and see if u find it...maybe just the shortcut is messed up.

---

or maybe you need to restore that file.

Im w98se you would run "sfc" and then youd pick the option to "extract one file from installation disk" then youd name the file etc.

In winME there was no sfc but you could do the same thing from the msconfig applet.

I am sure u can do it in xp also but I am not in front of an xp comp

I did a search for notepad.exe and it's not there anymore.

I tried to put the path for the shortcut when trying to open a notepad file and it can not find it at all.

Can you specify the command that i have to use in order to reinstall it from XP cd.

Thanks

in xp it should be in the c:\windows\system32 folder so look in there and see if u see it

to restore the file in xp..run

msconfig

then youll see "expand file"

then u type the "file to restore" which is notepad.exe

then "restore from"...which Id suppose youd browse the xp cd in the i386 folder of the cd

then save file in u would browse to the windows/system32 folder
