Well, although Windows XP comes with Windows Media Player 8, you can also use the classic WMP 6.4. which does support multiple instances...
Setting up to use multiple instances on WMP 6.4
1. Go to C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player
2. Double Click on mplayer2.exe which will start WMP 6.4.
3. Go to View\Options\
4. Click on the Player tab...
5. Select Open a new media player for each media file played.
Reassociating files to play media on WMP 6.4, not WMP 8
1. Run WMP 6.4 as described above.
2. Go to View\Options\
3. Click on the Format tab and select the media format accordingly....
Note: These steps also apply to any version of Windows that upgraded Windows Media player from 6.4 to 7.x or 8.0... After the upgrade, the previous version of Windows Media Player will still be usable..Last edited by NDC; January 16th, 2002 at 05:38 AM.

Oh, cool! That's nice to know, as I downloaded 7.x awhile back and was missing that multi-window thingy.

As far as I know, there is no where you can download WMP 8. It's installed with Windows XP... The most current WMP available for downloads is WMP 7.1...

wmp 7.1 works like 8 does... heck if you run across new wma8 media, wmp will download the codecs for you automatically if you're online...

I haven't used wmp since win98se, thats when it was the best, didn't use near the system resources in win98se as it does ever since winME.
I now use Global DivX player to play everything, just make sure you install the divx codec before you use it, otherwise you wont be able to play divx's. It has a really cool layout.
Sesami2K player is also pretty good, might wanna give that a try.
BTW you can change the windows setting on every file so that a different program opens them by default, I have changed avi, mpeg.. and so on to be opened by global divx player now.
Simply right click on the video file, under general "Open with" there is a change button there (windows XP), simply make whatever you want open it..
